The Gold We Hold

>> Saturday, August 8, 2009

Maybe this is a sign of getting older, but I am in the process of going through some things I have had for several years. I am trying to do, kind of a garage sale type thing on eBay. I am selling my Nascar Items and who knows, I may just continue to get rid of many more things.

OK, Now all of you know I am a preacher so I have to parallel this with the spiritual life. It is good to take an inventory of our spiritual lives and see if there is anything we need to get rid of. Sometimes it is easy to start doing things we said years ago we would never do. Sometimes it is letting go of things we thought we would never let go of. I know we are in a battle today with holding on to tradition or letting go of it. The concern I have is we seem to have a major movement of letting go of what was handed down to us. You have those on the extreme of not adapting to anything of today, such as technology, etc. And then you have those who grab onto everything and don't think about the future. I strongly believe we need to have a balance and that balance comes with continually seeking God's will for your individual life. You may be able to do things that I would never do, and I may try things which you would never think of, but the end result should be both of us should pull together to show the world that working together great things can happen.
Another part of taking inventory is in the area of Denominations, Leaders, Pastors, Laymen who should all learn to become a true leader in their world. We let politics slip into the church world and not the world or national politic, but we use those who have the "big names" or who are known and let others just sit there. As I am in classes for Christian Leadership, I am continually being shown how we, in the Holiness Movement, have no clue what true leadership is. True Christian Leadership is Servant Leadership, we need to show that we are willing to do the lowest of jobs, and live what we preach, or do what we say we live. Example: As a leader,Pastor, let us be willing to clean the church, serve dinner to the people, let someone who isn't used normally be up front. Remember; Leaders are only leaders if they have someone following them. I hope you get the picture. I just continue to see the same ones used across the holiness movement and realize we haven't even tapped the surface of the goldmines we have sitting in our churches. Let's take inventory of our selves, churches, and denominations and see the Gold that we hold.

Well that is my rant for the day...Have a great day and God Bless.

Greetings from the mountains of West Virginia,

We are back in the saddle again and still trying to catch up from the last few weeks. In the last three weeks we have spent time in the hospital with a family, and then proceeded to have a funeral for the family member that passed away, then onto revival and God giving a great time of truth and fellowship. Friday evening of revival we hosted the Hobe Sound Bible College Chapel Choir and successfully made it. It was another great time of fellowship with several friends. After the revival we then proceeded to IHC where you see everyone you haven't seen in the past year. It was so great to catch up with and remember a lot of good ol memories. Where else can you go and have such good fellowship with all the denominational barriers torn down and focus on worshiping God. I loved seeing the great crowd and to the best of my knowledge, it was the biggest crowd at IHC in several years. I am so glad to raise my children in the holiness movement and to hear them say, "They can't wait for IHC, Camp meeting, and Youth Camp." It is worth it to sacrifice to make sure the next generation carries on our holiness message. God bless all of you.

We are readying for Wednesday evening service and trying to finish another school paper. My wife's brother and family arrived yesterday and we are looking forward to visiting with them. It looks as if Thursday will be a day at Valley Worlds of Fun here in Fairmont and then a trip to an Outlet Mall. Life continues on very busy and we are loving it. If any of you know anyone local who would love to hear Hobe Sound Bible College Choir, Please let them know they will be at www.fairmontbmc.org on April 10th. Have a great day and God Bless.

I am praising God for the help of Sunday services. We had several community visitors Sunday morning and the children did a fantastic job as Sis. Becky Simms lead them in the CMB program. The Theme was "Are you on God's Team." God is opening up doors right around the church as we continue to "Reach our community." We are starting revival on April 9th and on Friday evening we are having the Hobe Sound Bible College Choir. If any of you know any in the area who would be interested in coming, please call them or email me at pastorpowell@netzero.net. We are looking forward to God's continued help and are praying for a real breakthrough in the church and community. God Bless you.

I would like to do some catching up. It has been quite a while since I have posted anything. Our church here in Fairmont WV is still going strong, we have started the skateboarding up once again for the summer. We are preparing for a great summer of 2009 and expecting to reach out to the neighborhood once again. To the disappointment of my kids, I have started working on my master's degree. Just as the first class was starting, I lost everything on my external drive. So, such is life…God is helping and I trust God will just keep showing us day by day what He wants and where He wants us to be each day. May God bless you and keep looking up, God is able to hold you up when all around tries to drag you down.
